  5. Virtual Poetry Program : Julie Swarstad Johnson: The Layers of Home: Writing Workshop

    April 20, 2021, 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM @ This is a virtual program presented through Zoom.

What do we mean when we say the word home? How has the past year changed, deepened, or complicated our ideas of home? In this participatory writing workshop for writers of all levels, we will approach what home means to us from multiple directions, using simple but evocative writing prompts to explore the idea of home through place, sensory detail, memory, and more. Julie Swarstad Johnson is the author of Pennsylvania Furnace (Unicorn Press, 2019) and co-editor of Beyond Earth’s Edge: The Poetry of Spaceflight (University of Arizona Press, 2020). She lives in Tucson and works at the University of Arizona Poetry Center.

  6. Virtual Poetry Program : Swarstad Johnson: Tell Me About Your Thirst : Reading

    April 20, 2021, 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM @ This is a virtual program accessible via Zoom.

Join us for a reading from Pennsylvania Furnace, Julie Swarstad Johnson’s debut book of poems. The poems in Pennsylvania Furnace inhabit layers of landscape, history, and belief—the contours of home. In these poems, voices from nineteenth-century iron making communities appear alongside a present-day speaker’s investigations of urban sprawl and industry in Arizona, revealing the ways our environments shape our selves. “Tell me about your thirst,” one speaker asks; at this reading, you’ll hear poems from Pennsylvania Furnace that trace the lines of longing that root us, in place and in memory.
