CQL Program : Phelps, James & Co. : PD's Company & Legacy in England with Katie Benton-Cohen

Tuesday, February 13, 2024

Come hear about PD historian Katie Benton-Cohen’s summer 2023 research trip to West Dean College, a manor house and arts college in southern England founded by Phelps Dodge heir and descendant Edward James. Their archives document the nineteenth-century history of the Phelps-Dodge company before its investment in Arizona copper, and include fascinating correspondence during the Civil war between brothers-in-law Daniel James and William E. Dodge, Sr., who served a term in Congress during the war.

Dr. Benton-Cohen teaches history at Georgetown University and is the author of two books, including Borderline Americans: Racial Division and Labor War in the Arizona Borderlands, which is a history of Cochise County. She was also the historical adviser for Bisbee'17. She is currently writing a history of the Phelps Dodge family and company, and will be living in Bisbee with her family while she is on Sabbatical in 2024.
